Thumb Splint Rings, which one is right for you?
Hello! thanks for reading. Picking a thumb splint can be overwhelming, we do have quite a few options to pick from, I'm going to try and give you some pointers you can use to pick the correct style for you.
You can click on the links in this blog post, they will take yoyu to splint styles you can consider. As always, please reach out if you have any questions!
THUMB JOINTS
First, is important to identify which joint needs splinting, there's the IP joint, MCP joint, and CMC joints.
IP joint
Second step would be identifying if your joint is triggering, deviating or hyperextending.
If your thumb is doing one of mentioned above, a boutonniere splint is recommended, a boutonniere splint can be worn in three different positions, depending on the support needed on the IP joint.
-With the bar or main shape under joint to Block severe hyperextension
-With the bar or main shape on top of joint to block flexion
-With the bar on the side to block deviation.
MCP JOINT
Hyperextension in the MCP joint can be treated with an MCP splint, we have adjustable and non adjustable styles available, which one to pick would depend if your thumb swells or not, if it doesn't swell a non adjustable style can be worn. If your joint does swell, I would recommend an adjustable style, that way you can resize the splint at home when it swells or swelling goes down.
CMC JOINT
Hyperextension in the CMC joint can be treated with an CMC splint, this splints support the MCP joint too. If your hyperextension is severe, adding palmar support is recommended, this applies to MCP splints too.
COMBINATION SPLINT RINGS
We also offer combination style splint rings, that combine support for IP, MCP and CMC joints. This styles are recommended if your full thumb needs support, if only one of your joints need support, a single joint splint is recommended.

All my best,
